After School Mountain Bike Programs
Ridetheory’s weekly youth mountain bike programs in Fernie are designed to help kids and teens develop confidence, improve their riding, and build a lifelong passion for mountain biking. Through weekly coaching sessions, riders progress alongside friends while learning valuable life skills like teamwork, perseverance, responsibility, and commitment. They’ll spend time outdoors, stay active, connect with nature, and leave each session excited for the next ride.
Every lesson is led by experienced PMBIA-certified coaches who create a fun, supportive environment where riders can safely develop at their own pace. Using the PMBIA progression model, participants build the six core mountain bike skills: Position & Balance, Braking, Cornering, Pressure Control, Wheel Lifts, and Shifting. As confidence grows, riders apply these skills to technical climbs and descents, roots, rocks, berms, rollers, jumps, drops, and other trail features appropriate to their age and ability.
Our small group sizes allow coaches to provide personalized feedback while helping riders make smart decisions on the trail. Kids learn how to choose appropriate lines, assess obstacles, understand when to ride a feature and when to walk it, and develop the judgment needed to ride safely and confidently. Progression is never rushed—we focus on building strong fundamentals that will support years of enjoyable riding.
We also believe great riders become great stewards of the trails they love. Throughout the season, participants learn about trail etiquette, respecting other trail users, and the important role that volunteers, trail associations, land managers, and local mountain bike clubs play in creating and maintaining Fernie’s incredible trail network. Our dirt jump programs include opportunities to help maintain the jumps because we believe in the mountain biking motto: No dig, no ride.

After School Program Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which youth mountain bike program is right for my child?
Programs are organized by both age and riding ability to ensure every participant is challenged appropriately while having fun. Always choose a course that matches your childs ability level now, and not where they want to be. If you’re unsure which group is the best fit, contact us before registering and we’ll help you choose the right program.
What will my child learn?
Every session is built around the six core PMBIA mountain bike skills: Position & Balance, Braking, Cornering, Pressure Control, Wheel Lifts, and Shifting. As riders progress, they’ll apply these skills to technical climbs and descents, roots, rocks, berms, rollers, jumps, drops, and other trail features while learning trail etiquette and safe decision-making.
Why choose weekly coaching instead of a camp?
Weekly coaching allows riders to build skills gradually throughout the season. Kids have time to practise between sessions, return with new questions, and continue progressing alongside the same coaches and riding group. This consistent approach builds stronger riding habits, greater confidence, and lasting friendships.
Are your youth programs suitable for beginners?
Yes. We offer programs for a wide range of ages and abilities, from young riders developing fundamental skills to experienced riders looking to improve technical trail riding, enduro, and dirt jump skills.
How many riders are in each group?
We keep our group sizes small so coaches can provide personalized instruction and meaningful feedback while creating a fun, supportive learning environment.
What should my child bring?
- A properly fitting mountain bike in good working condition
- A certified mountain bike helmet
- Knee pads (required)
- Gloves (recommended)
- Water and snacks
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- A spare tube that fits their bike
Does my child need their own mountain bike?
Yes. Riders should bring a mountain bike that fits properly and is in safe working order with functioning brakes and gears. A well-maintained bike helps maximize learning and keeps riders on the trail instead of in the repair stand.
What happens if it rains?
Our programs run in most weather conditions. Riders should come prepared with layers and rain gear, as mountain weather can change quickly. If severe weather creates unsafe riding conditions, participants will be contacted with any schedule changes.
Are your coaches certified?
Yes. Ridetheory coaches are PMBIA, and GSMBC certified mountain bike instructors with first aid training and extensive experience coaching youth riders. Our coaching philosophy focuses on safe progression, positive experiences, and helping every rider reach their potential.
Will my child ride the same trails every week?
No. As riders progress, coaches introduce a variety of trails and features appropriate to each group’s ability. Exploring different terrain helps participants apply their skills in new situations while building confidence throughout Fernie’s trail network.
Will my child learn about trail etiquette and stewardship?
Absolutely. Respect for the trails and the people who build and maintain them is a core part of every Ridetheory program. Riders learn trail etiquette, how to share the trails responsibly, and why stewardship is essential to keeping Fernie’s mountain bike community thriving. Many of our dirt jump programs also include opportunities to help maintain the jumps because we believe in the motto: No dig, no ride.
Can my child join if they miss a few sessions?
Yes. While attending every week provides the greatest opportunity for progression, we understand that families have busy schedules. Our coaches will help riders get back up to speed after an absence whenever possible.
Can you accommodate children with additional learning or support needs?
We strive to make Ridetheory’s youth mountain bike programs as inclusive and welcoming as possible. If your child requires additional learning, behavioural, physical, or one-on-one support to participate safely and successfully, please contact us before registering.
We’ll take the time to learn about your child’s needs and discuss whether we can provide the appropriate level of support within a group coaching environment or if a private session would be better. While we’d love to accommodate every rider, our group programs don’t always have the staffing or resources to provide individualized support. Reaching out before booking gives us the best opportunity to find the right program or recommend the most suitable option for your child.
Fun, inclusive, and professional mountain bike lessons.

Why Choose Weekly Mountain Bike Lessons?
Weekly coaching gives kids the opportunity to practise between sessions, build lasting confidence, and develop their mountain bike skills through consistent, progressive instruction. Rather than trying to learn everything in a single weekend, riders return each week ready to refine their technique, tackle new challenges, and build on the skills they’ve already mastered. Riding with the same group of friends and coaches creates a supportive environment where participants encourage one another, celebrate progression, and develop lasting friendships. Over the course of the season, those small improvements add up to stronger riders who are more confident, capable, and prepared to enjoy the trails for years to come.
