Frequently Asked Adult Coaching Questions
How do I know which course is right for me?
Choose your course based on your current riding ability and the skills you’d like to improve—not how long you’ve been riding. If you’re unsure which program is the best fit, contact us before booking and we’ll help you find the right clinic for your goals.
I've been riding for years. Will I still benefit from coaching?
Absolutely. Many experienced riders develop habits that limit their progression without realizing it. Professional coaching helps refine technique, improve efficiency, and build confidence on more challenging terrain. Even small adjustments can make a noticeable difference in your riding.
What skills will I learn?
Our coaching follows the PMBIA progression model, focusing on the six core mountain bike skills: Position & Balance, Braking, Cornering, Pressure Control, Wheel Lifts, and Shifting. As your skills improve, you’ll apply them to real trail situations, including technical climbs, descents, roots, rocks, berms, drops, jumps, and line choice.
Will I be pushed beyond my comfort zone?
No. Our coaches create a supportive environment where progression happens at your pace. You’ll be encouraged to challenge yourself, but you’ll never be pressured to ride features you’re not ready for. Sometimes the smartest progression is choosing to walk a feature and come back another day.
Do I need to be fit to join a course?
A reasonable level of fitness will help you enjoy the day, but you don’t need to be an elite athlete. Our courses include regular breaks, coaching discussions, and skill sessions, with the focus on learning rather than covering as much distance as possible.
What should I bring?
Please bring:
- A mountain bike in good working condition
- A certified mountain bike helmet
- Knee pads (required for most clinics)
- Gloves (recommended)
- Water and snacks
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- A spare tube that fits your bike
Do I need my own mountain bike?
Yes. You’ll get the most out of your lesson on a bike that fits you properly and is in good working order. If you’re visiting Fernie or need a rental, Gearhub Sports offer quality mountain bike rentals. Just getting started? Read our Essential Mountain Bike Gear for Beginners guide here.
Can I join on my own?
Absolutely. Many riders come on their own, and our group courses are a great way to meet new riding partners. Our coaches create a welcoming environment where participants quickly feel comfortable riding and learning together.
What happens if it rains?
Our programs run in most weather conditions. Fernie’s mountain weather can change quickly, so we recommend dressing in layers and bringing waterproof gear. If conditions become unsafe, we’ll contact participants with any schedule changes.
Are your coaches certified?
Yes. Ridetheory coaches are PMBIA, and GMBC certified mountain bike instructors with first aid training and extensive experience coaching riders of all abilities. Every lesson is designed around safe progression, personalized feedback, and helping you become a more confident rider.
Do I need a Fernie Trails Alliance membership?
Yes. Participants in Fernie programs require a valid Fernie Trails Alliance membership or trail pass unless otherwise stated. This helps support the maintenance and development of Fernie’s incredible trail network.
What if the course I want is full?
If your preferred clinic is fully booked, contact us to join the waitlist. Additional spaces often become available, and we may add extra sessions when demand allows. We also offer private coaching and guided tours.
