    Frequently Asked Questions

    Why Choose a Weekly Program?
Weekly coaching gives riders the opportunity to practise between sessions, build confidence gradually, and develop lasting riding habits. Returning each week with the same coaches and riding group creates consistent progression, personalized feedback, and a supportive community that makes learning more enjoyable.
    Why Ride with Ridetheory?
At Ridetheory, we combine professional PMBIA-certified coaching, small group sizes, and progressive skill development to create mountain bike experiences that help riders build confidence, improve their technique, and have more fun on the trail.
Do I need mountain biking experience?
Not at all. We offer programs ranging from introductory courses for newer riders to advanced clinics focused on cornering, technical riding, drops, and jumps. We’ll help you find the right program based on your current experience.
Why choose a women's mountain bike program?
Many riders find they feel more comfortable learning, asking questions, and trying new skills in a supportive group of women and gender non-conforming riders. Our goal is to create a welcoming environment where progression, encouragement, and fun come first.
    What will I learn?
Our coaching follows the PMBIA progression model, teaching the six core mountain bike skills:
    – Position & Balance
    – Braking
    – Cornering
    – Pressure Control
    – Wheel Lifts
    – Shifting
    – These skills are then applied to Fernie’s trails, helping riders improve confidence on climbs, descents, berms, roots, rocks, jumps, and technical terrain.
How do I know which program to book?
Choose your program based on your current riding ability rather than your fitness level. If you’re unsure where you fit, contact us before booking and we’ll recommend the best course for your goals.
    What should I bring?
Bring a mountain bike in good working order, a certified helmet, water, snacks, weather-appropriate clothing, gloves, knee pads, and a spare tube. Full-face helmets are optional for dirt jump sessions.
Do I need my own mountain bike?
Yes. Riders should bring a properly fitting mountain bike in safe working condition. If you’re visiting Fernie or need a bike, local shops like GearHub Adventure Rentals, Straight Line Bicycles, and Ski Base offer quality mountain bike rentals. Reserve early during peak summer months.
    Are the coaches certified?
Yes. Every session is led by experienced PMBIA-certified coaches with first aid training who focus on safe progression, personalized feedback, and creating a positive learning environment.
    What happens if it rains?
Programs run in most weather conditions. Fernie’s mountain weather can change quickly, so riders should dress in layers and come prepared. If conditions become unsafe, we’ll notify participants of any changes.
Do I need a trail pass?
Yes. Participants in Fernie programs require a valid membership or trail pass from the Fernie Trails Alliance (maintenance clinics excluded).
Can I come on my own?
Absolutely—and many riders do. These programs are a great way to meet new riding partners, build confidence, and become part of Fernie’s mountain bike community.
